2020 Lisgar Reach Tournament results

UBC “lead” the writing effort

The 2020 Lisgar Reach Tournament was held this past Saturday. It was a more low-key affair due to the risk of cancellation during a provincial labour dispute, and only local teams attended. A set was not written for this tournament because of this issue, and the event made use of the UBC set from the fall. Eleven teams attended, split into senior and junior divisions.

Lisgar A won the senior division by sweeping the field in a double round-robin. Glebe A and Lisgar B finished second with 7-3 records – they split the two games between them, but Glebe had a higher overall points total. Colonel By SS, Notre Dame HS, and Ashbury College were the other schools in the division. Lisgar C won the junior division over Ashbury B. Results of the event are found here (site is slow, but still works).

Lisgar is the favourite in Ottawa at this point. Their top team was split into the A and B teams, and if they can cooperate with each other long enough to survive a tournament, they will be Nationals-bound. Glebe once again looks like a provincial playoff team, but repeating last year’s top seed & semifinal may be difficult. Hopefully Notre Dame and Ashbury don’t get too discouraged by their results – they are close to each other in strength and will be vying for the third Ottawa provincial spot.

Comparing results to other sites may be awkward because nearly every top team will claim they played this set below full strength. Nevertheless, “reduced” UTS and Lisgar had nearly identical R-values at the top of the pack, with “Etobicoke”, Abbey Park HS, and Glebe CI in a cluster just behind. “Montcalm” was a definite case of being shorthanded (ie: solo), but is still within grasp of that group – and has demonstrated better performance at other events.

Independent event season is over (until a possible April event) and regionals will begin. Some regions have already started, but most will be underway in February and March. I will make mention of any results as I get them.
