2020 UBC and 2021 Lisgar tournament results

During my absence, some teams have kept up with their quizzing efforts online. Two runnings of the 2020 UBC independent tournament set have occurred, featuring teams from four provinces.

The tournament hosted by UBC ran last fall and had teams from Alberta and British Columbia. The Renert School came out on top with an undefeated record among the 8-team field, followed by Tempo School from Edmonton. The Reach Scores database appears to be offline now, so a picture of the results table will have to suffice.

The set was also used last weekend by Lisgar for the Ontario and New Brunswick teams. I was able to participate as staff for this. In the senior division, Abbey Park HS came back in an advantaged final with Glebe CI 420-380 and 490-350 to win the event. No one went undefeated in the senior round-robin and the top five teams were all within two wins of each other. The junior division was won by Martingrove B in a 400-310 final over Abbey Park B.

The R-values were calculated using the round-robin scores across both sites. R-value does have to be taken with a grain of salt during these online times, though: things like lag and connection glitches would not exist in in-person games but can be a factor in close online matches.

There are benefits to the online matches, however. It is much easier to connect to teams that would normally be separated by geography, and moving between “rooms” is much snappier compared to sites where teams get lost in a strange building looking for their next round. The buzzing website was also very intuitive, and will be the preferred option for major events like the NAQT HSNCT or Reach Nationals.

Myself, I will not be able to commit to prognostications or previews. I still have the ability to turn results into R-values, but the presentation is now going to be quite lacking.
